How do you know when to seek professional help?

May 23, 2016 Nicole Barbour, LCPC, NCC

Admitting that you need help is hard enough, how do you determine if it is necessary to seek therapy and begin looking for a therapist? There are a few signs you can look out for that let you know it may be time to reach out for professional help.

Have you been feeling ‘out of whack’ or slightly off for the past few weeks? Pay attention to the emotions you have been experiencing, specifically look for any sadness or anger that seems to continue or may be out of the ordinary. Feeling hopeless may be another indicator that it is time to reach out. A therapist can help you identify and sort through these emotions further, as well as provide treatment to help you begin feeling better.

Have you recently experienced the loss of someone or something important in your life? This can be an extremely hard time for anyone, and some people may find it difficult to cope with the loss. Symptoms that are not handled in a healthy way can intensify and begin to have a serious impairment on your well-being and functioning. You may start to notice the symptoms interfering with your ability to get through each day.

Has there been a big change in your life? Adjusting to change is often a difficult thing to do. Finding healthy ways to cope with a big change can be even more difficult. A good, strong support system can often help you get through this but you may need more help. A therapist can help you find healthy ways to cope with the change and experience a positive adjustment.

Are you having difficulty with one of the relationships in your life? Maybe you are having trouble in your marriage or there is conflict between you and a family member. This may be difficult to maneuver on your own. Relationships can be difficult and require a great deal of time and effort to maintain. You may need help addressing problems within your relationships and a therapist can help you find ways to improve those relationships.

Have you experienced a traumatic event? Trauma can have extremely negative effects on a person and, if not dealt with in a healthy way, can lead to more serious issues. If you’ve experienced abuse, neglect, or other trauma and have not worked through it, you may not have learned healthy ways to cope. Talking to a therapist about the trauma, whether it is recent or from your past, can help you work through it.

If you have experienced any of these signs, it may be time to seek therapy. There are many therapists out there that can provide the help you need, so find one that will be a good fit for you.
